Moderate consumption of chocolate may relieve headaches and be beneficial for weight loss. But what kind of chocolate exactly are we talking about?
Dr. Linda Khasanova, a Russian nutritionist, has debunked three common myths about chocolate, advocating that it should not be viewed as a bad confectionery.
In an interview with Lenta.ru, Dr. Khasanova debunked the myth that says chocolate causes headache for people who are intolerant. She highlighted that, when consumed in moderation, dark chocolate might actually alleviate headaches by promoting the production of serotonin, the happiness hormone.
She also explained that dark chocolate is rich in tryptophan, a compound that helps produce serotonin. Consuming a few pieces of dark chocolate can boost mood, reduce anxiety and fatigue, enhance concentration, improve sleep quality, and even help regulate appetite.
Contrary to popular belief, Dr. Khasanova noted, chocolate does not necessarily lead to weight gain and obesity. Small quantities of high-quality dark chocolate can be beneficial for those managing their weight, as it can control cravings for sweets and help maintain a balanced diet, according to Russia Today.
She advised that it's crucial to choose dark chocolate that is free from sugar, milk, or artificial additives, as these ingredients are not healthy and can contribute to weight gain instead.
Additionally, Dr. Khasanova refuted the myth that chocolate damages the skin. She pointed out that cocoa beans contain antioxidants that combat free radicals, thereby improving skin health. However, she warned that excessive consumption might lead to skin allergies.
Dr. Khasanova stressed that dark chocolate with a natural composition, containing at least 70% cocoa and made from high-quality cocoa beans, offers health benefits. She recommends consuming about 20 grams of such chocolate daily.
